Figuring out how to make a wooden stool starts with one decision: how tall should it be? Bar-height stools run 29–32 inches and pair with 40–42-inch bar counters, while counter-height stools run 23–28 inches for 35–37-inch counters. Build the seat and legs to match that target, and the rest is cutting, assembly, and finish. Here’s the simplest path that produces a stool strong enough to sit on.
Pick the Stool Height and Seat Size First
The most common mistake is building a stool before knowing what it will stand beside. Measure your counter or bar top first, then subtract 10–12 inches for comfortable leg room. That number is your seat height.
Seat size stays fairly consistent across plans, usually 15–16 inches across offer space for one person without crowding. A published bar-height plan uses a 16 1/8 in. W x 15 1/2 in. Cut the Seat and Legs

For a modern oak stool, cut a seat circle from a 1 in. x 12 in. board at about 11 inches diameter, and cut the base from 1 in. x 6 in. oak into two 14-inch pieces plus one 5-inch piece. For a simple stool, a seat board at 16 in. x 10 1/2 in. with legs cut to length keeps things easy. Cut all four to identical length, then mark the angle for each leg before any cut.
Drill, Assemble, and Glue the Joints
Assembly depends on the design. Glue-only joints work well for decor pieces and light use, but functional seating calls for wood screws, pocket holes, or dowels.
Glue the legs in place and clamp overnight; several plans use overnight glue cure, so don’t rush this step.
Sand, Finish, and Let It Cure
Sand everything starting with 120-grit and moving to 220-grit for a smooth surface. For oak, apply wood conditioner before staining, then finish with polycrylic, sanding lightly between coats. For rustic log stools, use polyurethane and give it full drying time before anyone sits on it.
