Choosing a ski helmet comes down to fit, then certification, then goggle compatibility and ventilation.
The right way to pick a ski helmet starts with one question: does it fit your head? A helmet that’s too loose or too tight won’t protect you properly, no matter how many features it has. Once the fit is right, you check for a snow-sport safety certification like ASTM F2040, then make sure it works with your goggles and vents. That order — fit, certification, compatibility — is the sequence that keeps you safe on the slopes.
How to Size a Ski Helmet
You need your head circumference in centimeters, because most manufacturer sizing charts use that unit. Grab a soft tape measure or a piece of string you can lay flat against a ruler.
Measure around the largest part of your head — typically about 1 inch above your eyebrows and just above your ears. Keep the tape level all the way around. If you plan to wear a thin beanie or balaclava underneath, or you have thick or long hair, add about 1 centimeter to your measurement to account for the extra bulk.
Compare your number to the manufacturer’s size chart before you buy. Sizes vary by brand, so the same circumference might land you in a medium from one company and a large from another. Never assume your size carries over between brands.
What a Proper Ski Helmet Fit Feels Like
A correctly fitting helmet feels snug all around with no pressure points and no gaps between the liner and your head. It should sit level, not tilted back or forward. The front edge belongs no more than 1 inch above your eyebrows — low enough to protect your forehead.
Test the fit with two quick checks:
- Shake test: shake your head side to side and up and down. The helmet should stay firmly in place and move with your head, not independently.
- Rotation test: try rotating the helmet with your hands. If it shifts on your head, the fit is too loose.
Secure the chin strap so it’s snug but comfortable. You should be able to fit no more than two fingers between the strap and your chin. A too-loose strap defeats the whole purpose of the helmet in a crash.
Safety Certifications to Look For
Your helmet needs a recognized snow-sport certification. In the US, the standard most commonly cited is ASTM F2040-18, which ANSI’s standards store lists as the ASTM standard for recreational snow-sport helmets. Boston Children’s advises checking for a sticker on the back of the helmet showing ASTM F2040 or CE EN 1077.
If you’re buying in Canada, Health Canada lists EN 1077, ASTM F2040, Snell RS 98, and CSA Z263.1 as applicable ski and snowboard helmet standards. In Europe, CE EN 1077 is the standard retailers and manufacturers commonly cite. A helmet without one of these recognized labels should be a hard pass — the certification is what tells you the helmet was actually tested for impact protection.
Goggle Compatibility and Construction Choices
Once the fit and certification check out, try your goggles on with the helmet. You want no gap between the helmet brim and the top of your goggles — the “gaper gap” that leaves your forehead exposed to the cold. The goggles should also sit without pressing on the bridge of your nose. Look for helmets with goggle clips or shapes designed for the goggles you already own.
Ventilation matters too. Adjustable vents let you dump heat on warm spring days and close up when it’s cold. A dial fit system on the back of the helmet lets you fine-tune the snugness without swapping sizes. For the build itself:

- ABS hardshell helmets are more durable and handle knocks from lifts and gear bags better.
- Hybrid builds split the difference.

One more thing: replace any helmet after a significant impact, even if it looks fine. The foam absorbs the crash and won’t protect the same way twice. Most manufacturers also recommend replacing a helmet after several seasons of normal use, because materials degrade with age and temperature swings.
